Baby Talk reintroduced a powerful weapon last night: dude harmony. If you can get one guy to sing a song, one guy to agreeably sing the same thing next to him, and a third guy to “ooh” along to capture the summation of the moods of the phrase, you don’t get an ordinary three-part harmony. What you get is a lyrical phrase with two underlines and an exclamation point, which automatically makes it seem closer to the truth.
With their dude harmony, funky beats, and impossibly highly-capoed strings, Baby Talk did something very few bands in San Francisco can accomplish: They thawed the frozen audience. There was real dancing at Thee Parkside last night, which escalated through Baby Talk’s “I Know I’m Not Wrong” and would have shot them through the roof had the sound guy, sensing the dangerous level of fun in the room, not cut them off at the beginning of their encore. Baby Talk almost destroyed Thee Parkside!
